You’d think of all people, lawyers would be the most scared of offending readers. We can’t even use the word ‘nutter’ at my paper without the legal department unfolding its black, jointed wings and descending slowly on us from above.
But advertising has truly beguiling and transformative powers. It is a smoky potion.
Witness this old ad, apparently courtesy the UK’s Law Society. It’s for a kind of Yellow Pages of lawyers. Innocuous enough, you might think.

I mean, really. Who do they think they’re fooling? It’s clearly the middle guy.
So, what have we learned? Well, we all know people think lawyers are scum. Now we know lawyers – or at least, the particular lawyers who were batshit enough to approve this creative – think people are scum, too.
